About this tour
Anyone who has watched the 1974 Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun will recognise James Bond Island. The thin, leaning rock that stands alone in the water is Ko Tapu, a limestone needle of about 20 metres. It rises just off Khao Phing Kan in Phang Nga Bay, a national park where karst cliffs climb straight out of green water. For most visitors this is the scenic high point of a Phuket trip, and it takes a full day to see properly.
Trip Dust runs this as a full day out of Phuket. We drive you to the pier, then head into the bay between the cliffs and lagoons. You choose the boat: a speed boat spends less time in transit and more at each stop, while a traditional long-tail covers the same route at a slower, quieter pace. A typical day takes in five stops:
- Suwan Khuha (Monkey Cave) Temple: a cave shrine cut into a limestone hill, with a large reclining Buddha inside and a resident troop of monkeys around the entrance.
- Phang Nga Bay cruise: the boat passes sheer limestone karsts, mangrove channels and small islands scattered across the water.
- Sea-cave canoeing: a local paddler takes you by canoe through low sea caves into the lagoons (hongs) enclosed by the cliffs, which larger boats cannot enter.
- Koh Panyee village: a Muslim fishing village built on stilts over the water, known for its floating football pitch. Lunch is served here, with time to walk the wooden lanes.
- James Bond Island (Ko Tapu): the last stop, on Khao Phing Kan beach, where you can photograph the leaning Ko Tapu needle out in the bay.
The trip works for a wide range of travellers, including families and first-time visitors. The cruise and canoeing are calm rather than strenuous, so children and older travellers can take part; let us know in advance if anyone needs a hand boarding the boat.
Please note: The Phang Nga Bay National Park entry fee is included in the price on both the speed-boat and long-tail options, so there is nothing further to pay at the pier. The tour must be booked ahead; it is not a pay-on-pickup activity.

Quick tips for your trip
- Recommended time to visit: Phang Nga Bay is at its best in the November–April dry season, when the sea is calmest and the water clearest. Our tour starts early in the morning to beat both the heat and the midday crowds at James Bond Island.
- What to bring: Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a light change of clothes — you may get a little wet during the canoe ride. Wear sandals or flip-flops you don't mind getting wet when stepping on and off the boat.
- Photography tip: The leaning Ko Tapu rock photographs best from Khao Phing Kan beach, but the limestone karsts fill the view from the boat as well, so keep your camera out across the whole cruise rather than only at the island. A waterproof pouch is worth having for the canoeing.
- Good to know: Some sea caves are only reachable at low tide, so the canoeing route can vary slightly with the tides on the day. Carry a little cash for snacks, drinks or souvenirs at Koh Panyee.
- Recommended visit duration: Plan for a full day. Pickup is early morning and drop-off is by early evening, covering the drive to the pier, the bay cruise, sea canoeing, lunch at Koh Panyee and the James Bond Island photo stop.

Frequently asked questions
-
Why is it called James Bond Island?
The island's real name is Khao Phing Kan, and the famous leaning needle of rock beside it is Ko Tapu. It became known as "James Bond Island" after it appeared in the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun.
-
Will there be vegetarian or Indian food at lunch?
Lunch is a Thai set meal at Koh Panyee village, and vegetarian options are available — just let us know your preference when you book so the village restaurant can keep your veg dishes ready. There is no dedicated Indian food on the island itself, so if you have specific needs it is a good idea to carry a few snacks along.
-
Do I need to be able to swim for the sea canoeing?
No. You sit in a stable canoe paddled by a local guide, and everyone wears a life jacket. You stay dry for the most part and never need to swim.
-
What is the difference between the speed boat and the long-tail boat option?
Both cover the same stops and both include the national park fee. The speed boat cuts the travel time between sites, which leaves longer at each one and suits a quicker pace. The traditional long-tail is slower and quieter, and is the more conventional way to see the bay. State your choice when you book.
-
Where does the tour go from Phuket, and how long is the journey?
The pier is in Phang Nga, about 1 to 1.5 hours by road each way from Phuket, with the boat time in the bay on top. That combined travel is the reason the tour fills a full day, leaving early and getting you back by early evening. Hotel pickup and drop-off can be added for a fee; message us on WhatsApp and we will set it up.
-
Can children and older travellers join this tour?
Yes. The cruise is gentle and the canoeing is calm, so both children and older travellers manage it. The main caveat is the length of the day and the repeated boarding on and off boats, which can tire very young children or anyone with limited mobility. Let us know ahead of time if a guest will need help getting on board.
