About this tour

Chiang Mai Night Safari was Thailand's first night zoo and remains its largest, spread across an open park on the south-western edge of the city. The point of going after dark is simple: most of the big animals here are nocturnal, so an evening tram ride shows them awake and moving rather than asleep in the shade. From an open-sided tram you pass within a few metres of lions, tigers and grazing deer as they feed and roam.

A visit covers three zones plus a run of evening shows:

  • Predator Prowl (tram): a route through open grassland holding lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars and hyenas, the animals most worth seeing once the sun is down.
  • Savanna Safari (tram): a calmer African-savannah loop past giraffes, zebras, deer and other grazers, several of which you can hand-feed from your seat.
  • Jaguar Trail (walking zone): a flat lakeside loop you cover on foot, passing white tigers, jaguars, pumas, flamingos and tortoises at whatever pace suits you.
  • Live shows: a Tiger Show, a Wild Animal Show, a Dancing Show and the lakeside Musical Fountain Show, staged through the evening.

Because most of the visit happens from a seated tram, it works for mixed groups: children get a close look at the big cats, and anyone who tires on their feet need only walk the short Jaguar Trail. It slots neatly into an evening after a slower day elsewhere in Chiang Mai. We book the tickets and tram seats ahead of your arrival, so there is no counter queue or on-the-spot haggling to deal with.

Please note: Children under 100 cm enter free. Child rate applies up to 140 cm. Ticket counter closes at 9:00 PM. Best experience is the dusk tram around 7:00-7:30 PM.

Quick tips for your trip

  • Best time: take the 7:00-7:30 PM tram. That is roughly dusk, when the predators start to wake and stir, which is when the route is at its best.
  • What to wear: light long sleeves and trousers, since mosquitoes pick up after sunset, plus comfortable shoes for the Jaguar Trail loop.
  • Photography: flash is not allowed on the tram, to avoid stressing the animals. Switch your phone to night mode and steady it against the tram rail to keep shots sharp.

Frequently asked questions

  • Should we come for the day part or the night part?

The Jaguar Trail walking zone closes earlier than the rest of the park, so it reads best in daylight or early evening. The two tram routes, Predator Prowl and Savanna Safari, plus the live shows, are what the evening is for, since the big cats are most active then. Doing both is ideal; if you have to choose, take the night tram.

  • Will young children be alright on the tram?

Yes. The animals are kept securely apart from the tram route, and the trams run slowly and stay well lit. Children tend to enjoy seeing the cats at close range. Pack a light jacket, as the temperature drops once it is dark.

  • How much walking does this involve for older travellers?

Very little. The two tram routes need no walking at all, and the only stretch on foot is the Jaguar Trail, a flat lakeside path that older travellers can take slowly without trouble.

  • How much time does a full visit take?

Allow 3 to 4 hours to cover both tram routes, the Jaguar Trail walk and the shows, the Musical Fountain included. Add about an hour if you plan to eat at the park cafe.

  • Can we find vegetarian or Indian meals here?

The park cafe serves snacks and meals, but its pure-veg and Indian choices are thin. Chiang Mai itself has a good range of Indian and vegetarian restaurants, so most guests time dinner in town for before or after the visit. Message us on WhatsApp and we will suggest somewhere to eat.

  • Where exactly is the park, and can you arrange pickup?

It sits in the Hang Dong area on the south-western edge of Chiang Mai, about 12 km from the Old City, which is roughly a 25 to 30 minute Grab ride. Hotel pickup is not part of the standard ticket, but we can set it up for an added fee. Send us your hotel name when you book and we will confirm the pickup time and cost on WhatsApp.
