About this tour
The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is a no-riding elephant experience. Instead of riding, you spend a morning hand-feeding the elephants, getting into the mud with them, and rinsing them off in the water afterwards. It operates as a 100% no-riding, no-chains rescue sanctuary: the elephants here, several of them retired from former logging and trekking camps, are free to move around, forage and bathe at their own pace while visitors stay alongside them. The activities are slow-paced and hands-on, which makes the visit straightforward for families travelling with children or older parents.
The sanctuary operates four camps in Phuket — Thalang, Bang Tao, Waterfall and Kathu — spread across the island's inland jungle. Kathu sits closest to the west-coast beaches (Patong, Kata, Karon). When you arrive, you are handed a sanctuary shirt to change into and your mahout-guide introduces the herd before the activities start. A typical visit covers four parts:
- Hand-feeding — you feed the elephants bananas and sugarcane directly from your hand while standing close to them. The food is supplied at the camp.
- Mud spa — you step into the mud pool with the herd and work handfuls of mud onto their skin. The mud acts as a natural sunblock and coolant for the animals, and it tends to be the part of the visit people remember most.
- Bathing & shower — you then move to the clean-water area to wash the mud off, splashing and rinsing the elephants down. This is included on the Feed & Shower, Half Day and longer programmes.
- Jungle walk & lunch — the longer programmes add an easy walk with the elephants around the camp grounds plus a Thai lunch (covered on the Half Day, Half Day Premium, Watch Me and One Day Walk).
You choose the length that fits your trip, from the 1-hour Feed Me up to the One Day Walk with Elephant (6 hrs, age 7+). Every programme covers a guide, insurance and the elephant food. The longer options also include an air-conditioned transfer, a photographer, snacks and drinks, and lunch and/or dinner. The mahout-guides run the session in English, and the Trip Dust team is reachable in Hindi and English for booking and pickup questions. None of the activities are physically demanding, so the visit works for children and grandparents as well as couples and groups.

Quick tips for your trip
- Recommended time to visit: Book a morning session if you can. It is cooler for both visitors and the elephants, and most morning programmes are timed so lunch follows the activities. Phuket runs tours year-round, but the November to April dry season is the most reliable for weather. The sanctuary is open daily from 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM.
- What to wear & bring: You will get muddy and wet, so wear a swimsuit under clothes you don't mind ruining, with flip-flops or water shoes. Pack a towel, a full change of clothes, sunscreen and insect repellent. The camp issues a sanctuary shirt to wear for the duration of the visit.
- Photography tip: The clearest shots come from the mud spa and the water rinse. Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch and pass it to your guide during those parts, since your own hands will be busy and muddy. Morning light gives the cleanest results.
- Transport & age: Transfer is free within 5 km of your hotel and carries a small surcharge beyond that. The 1-hour Feed Me has no transfer at all, as you meet the team at the camp. Only the full-day One Day Walk with Elephant has an age floor (7 and above); the shorter programmes set no minimum age and are fine for young children and older travellers.
- Recommended visit duration: The Half Day (around 3 hours, covering feeding, the mud spa, the shower and a meal) is the option most families settle on. Choose Feed Me or Feed & Shower (1 to 1.5 hours) if your schedule is tight, or the One Day Walk (6 hours) if you want the longest version with the jungle walk.

Frequently asked questions
-
Do we ride the elephants here?
No. Riding is not part of any programme. This is a 100% no-riding, no-chains rescue sanctuary, so the day is built around feeding the elephants by hand, getting into the mud with them and helping rinse them in the water. Several of the elephants are retired from former logging and trekking camps and now spend their time foraging and bathing rather than carrying visitors.
-
Can young children and older parents join in?
Yes. The activities are gentle and low-effort: hand-feeding, working mud onto the elephants, and splashing in shallow water, all supervised by the mahout-guides. There is no walking or climbing involved on the shorter visits. The one restriction is the full-day One Day Walk with Elephant, which is limited to ages 7 and above. The Feed Me, Feed & Shower and Half Day programmes carry no age limit and are the usual choice for families with kids or grandparents along.
-
Is there vegetarian or Indian food available?
The meal-inclusive programmes (Half Day, Half Day Premium, Watch Me and the One Day Walk) serve a Thai lunch, and vegetarian meals can be arranged if you flag it at the time of booking on WhatsApp, so the camp has time to prepare it. There is no dedicated Indian menu at the camps. If that matters to you, the shorter programmes wrap up fairly early, leaving time to eat back in Patong or Phuket Town.
-
What is the drive like from Patong and the beach areas?
All four camps (Thalang, Bang Tao, Waterfall and Kathu) lie inland from the coast. Kathu is the nearest to the west-coast beaches and works out to roughly a 20 to 45 minute drive from Patong, Kata and Karon, depending on which hotel you start from. Transfer is free within 5 km of your hotel and runs in an air-conditioned vehicle on every programme apart from the 1-hour Feed Me. We confirm the assigned camp and your pickup time over WhatsApp before the day.
-
What should I wear and bring?
Expect to come out muddy and soaked, so a swimsuit under old clothes plus flip-flops or water shoes is the right setup. Bring a towel, a full change of clothes, sunscreen and insect repellent. A sanctuary shirt is handed out at the camp to wear over your clothes during the visit, and there are changing facilities on site for cleaning up afterwards.
-
Can we take photos with the elephants?
Yes. The feeding, the mud spa and the water rinse are the moments that photograph well. Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch, since the water and mud are unavoidable. On the Feed & Shower, Half Day, Half Day Premium and One Day Walk programmes a photographer is included and will take pictures of you with the herd.
