Krabi 2-Day Itinerary: Islands, Cliffs and Hot Springs

Krabi is the quieter, more scenic cousin of Phuket — limestone cliffs rising straight out of the sea, calm beaches at Ao Nang and Railay, and some of the best island day trips in southern Thailand. Two days is enough to do one proper boat day and one land day covering the jungle pools and hot springs, leaving the evenings for the relaxed Ao Nang beachfront. It pairs naturally with Phuket, since the two are only a couple of hours apart by road or ferry.

Most travellers base themselves in Ao Nang, the main beach town, which has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and boat operators. Indian passport holders still get up to 60 days visa-free as of mid-2026 — complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card before flying and confirm the current rules before you travel. A note for nervous swimmers: both days can be enjoyed without deep water, but the boat crossings can be choppy, so read the safety notes below.

Day 1: Island-Hopping by Boat

Krabi is built for the water, so give Day 1 to the islands. The classic Four Islands tour covers Phra Nang Cave Beach, Chicken Island, Tup Island and Poda Island, usually by longtail or speedboat with snorkelling stops and lunch. At low tide a sandbar appears linking three of the islands, which you can walk across — a genuinely memorable moment. Expect to be out from roughly 9am to 4pm.

If you would rather stay on a bigger, more comfortable boat with a planned route and meals included, a Krabi sea cruise is the easier choice, especially for families and older travellers. Krabi is also one of the launch points for Phi Phi Island, so if the famous bays are top of your list you can do that as a full day from here instead of the Four Islands. Either way, book ahead in peak season — the best boats fill quickly.

Day 2: Railay, Hot Springs and the Emerald Pool

Spend the morning at Railay Beach, a cliff-bound peninsula reachable only by a ten-minute longtail ride from Ao Nang. It is the postcard image of Krabi — sheer karst walls, white sand and rock climbers on the cliffs. Phra Nang Cave Beach next door is arguably the prettiest stretch in the province and worth the short walk.

In the afternoon, head inland to the Hot Springs, where warm mineral water collects in natural rock pools in the jungle, and the nearby Emerald Pool, a clear blue-green natural pool fed by a spring. Both are about an hour from Ao Nang and easily combined in one trip. If you have energy left, the Tiger Cave Temple rewards a steep 1,200-step climb with a panoramic view over the province — one for the early risers, not the midday heat.

Where to Eat and How to Get Around

Ao Nang's main strip has plenty of seafood, Thai and Western options, and a couple of Indian restaurants serving North Indian and vegetarian dishes — handy after a long boat day. For Jain or strict vegetarian needs, mention it when ordering; most kitchens can adapt with notice.

Getting around Krabi means longtail boats for the beaches and a car or songthaew for the inland sights. There is no mass-transit system, so for a two-day trip a private transfer for the land day saves a lot of time. Trip Dust can arrange airport pickups, boat bookings and a driver for the Emerald Pool day so the logistics are handled before you arrive.

How Krabi Fits Into a Thailand Trip

Two days suits Krabi as part of a southern loop rather than a standalone holiday. The most popular combination is Phuket plus Krabi, splitting boat days between the two — they share the same Andaman coastline and the transfer between them is straightforward. If beaches and islands are the whole point of your trip, compare the southern options in our Phuket, Pattaya and Krabi guide, then tell us your dates and we will build the route around your flights.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2 days enough for Krabi?

Two days covers one island boat trip and one land day of Railay, the hot springs and the Emerald Pool — the essentials. If you want to add a second island day, the Tiger Cave Temple climb at a relaxed pace, or a kayaking trip through the mangroves, give it three days.

Can I visit Phi Phi Island from Krabi?

Yes. Krabi is one of the main launch points for Phi Phi, with ferries and speedboats running daily — the crossing takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by ferry or under an hour by speedboat. You can do it as a full-day trip and still return to Ao Nang in the evening.

Do the Krabi boat trips suit non-swimmers and older travellers?

Mostly yes — you can enjoy the beaches and viewpoints without swimming, and life jackets are provided on the boats. The open-water crossings can be bumpy on a speedboat, so anyone with back or heart concerns, or who is pregnant, should choose a slower longtail or a larger cruise boat and tell the operator in advance.

Is Krabi better than Phuket?

Krabi is quieter, greener and more scenic; Phuket has more nightlife, shopping and a wider choice of hotels and direct flights. Many travellers do both, since they are close together. For a calm beach trip Krabi wins; for variety and convenience Phuket has the edge.
