About this tour

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is a no-riding, ethical sanctuary: no hooks, no chains, no performing tricks. The interaction is hands-on and low-impact. You hand-feed the elephants bananas and sugarcane, walk alongside them through the forest, help apply a mud coating that protects their skin, and then bathe them in the river. Trip Dust arranges the booking and the transfer.

The sanctuary spreads across 7 camps in two parts of the Chiang Mai countryside: 6 camps in the Mae-Wang area and 1 camp in San Pa Tong district. Programmes run daily, and the camp operates from 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM. The Trip Dust team handles communication in both Hindi and English.

Six programmes are available, ranging from a 1-hour visit to a 3-day, 2-night volunteer stay, so you can choose how long you spend with the herd:

  • Feed Me (1 hr): The shortest programme. You hand-feed the elephants with a guide. No transport and no meal; held at the San Pa Tong camp. Includes guide, insurance and elephant food.
  • Feed and Shower (1.5 hrs): Feeding plus helping to wash the elephants down, with snacks and drinks afterwards. No transport; held at the San Pa Tong camp. Includes guide, insurance, elephant food, snacks and drinks.
  • Half Day (6 hrs): The standard programme, covering feeding, the mud coating and a river bath, with transport and lunch included. Held in the Mae-Wang area. Includes transport, guide, insurance, a photographer, elephant food, snacks, drinks and lunch/dinner.
  • Watch Me (6 hrs): An observe-and-feed programme for visitors who prefer to watch the elephants roam and bathe rather than handle them. Held in the Mae-Wang area. Includes transport, guide, insurance, a photographer, elephant food, snacks, drinks and lunch/dinner.
  • One Day Elephant Care (8 hrs): A full day spent caring for the elephants, with more time at the camp than the half-day option. Held in the Mae-Wang area. Includes transport, guide, insurance, elephant food, snacks, drinks and lunch/dinner.
  • Volunteer (3 Days · 2 Nights): A multi-day stay at the camp with more sustained hands-on involvement. Includes transport, 2-night accommodation, guide, insurance, elephant food, snacks, drinks and meals (Day 1: lunch & dinner; Day 2: breakfast, lunch & dinner; Day 3: breakfast & lunch). Runs twice a week, Mon–Wed or Thu–Sat. Minimum 2 persons, age 11+ only.

The activity works for families with children, couples, friends and solo travellers, and children in particular tend to enjoy feeding the elephants at close range. Be aware that there is walking on uneven jungle paths and you will get muddy and wet, so it suits anyone who is reasonably mobile and does not mind getting into the water.

Transfer is free within 5 km of Chiang Mai old city, with a surcharge beyond that radius. The drive uses a 9-seater air-conditioned van for most of the way, switching to a 4x4 with covered bench seating for the last 20 minutes up to the camps.

Please note: Volunteer programme operates 2 rounds a week: Mon-Wed or Thu-Sat. Minimum 2 persons. Age 11+ only.

Quick tips for your trip

  • Recommended time to visit: November to February is the dry, cooler season and the most comfortable time for a day outdoors here. The camp is open 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and the half-day programmes usually run a morning and an afternoon batch; mornings are cooler. We confirm your exact start time on WhatsApp.
  • What to wear and bring: Light, quick-drying clothes that can get muddy and wet, with a swimsuit underneath, plus a towel, a change of clothes, sunscreen and shoes with grip for the paths. Feeding, the mud coating and the river bath all leave you dirty and soaked, so plan around that rather than wearing anything you want to keep clean.
  • Photography tip: Morning light is softer for elephant photos. Bring a waterproof pouch or phone case so you can take pictures during the mud coating and river bath. The Half Day and Watch Me programmes include a photographer who shoots your time with the herd.
  • Getting there: Transfer is free within 5 km of Chiang Mai old city, with a surcharge beyond that. A 9-seater air-conditioned van covers most of the route, then a 4x4 with covered bench seating handles the final 20 minutes to the camp.
  • Which camp: Feed Me and Feed and Shower are at the San Pa Tong camp with no transport. Half Day, Watch Me, One Day Elephant Care and Volunteer are in the Mae-Wang area with transport included.
  • Recommended visit duration: Choose by the time you want at the camp. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the Feed programmes at San Pa Tong, about 6 hours including transfers for the half-day feed-mud-and-bathe programme, a full 8 hours for One Day Care, or the 3-day, 2-night Volunteer stay (Mon–Wed or Thu–Sat, minimum 2 persons, age 11+ only).

Frequently asked questions

  • Does the sanctuary allow elephant riding?

No. This is a no-riding sanctuary, with no hooks and no chains used on the animals. The programmes are built around hand-feeding the elephants, applying a protective mud coating and bathing them in the river, rather than riding or staged performances.

  • Can young children and older parents take part?

Children usually take to the feeding and bathing well, so it works for families. Keep in mind the walking is on uneven jungle paths and you will get muddy and wet, so it suits anyone who is reasonably mobile and willing to get into the water. Older visitors who would rather stay dry can take the Watch Me programme, which is observe-and-feed only. The 3-day Volunteer programme is restricted to ages 11 and above.

  • Is vegetarian or Indian food available at the camp?

The Half Day, Watch Me, One Day Elephant Care and Volunteer programmes include a Thai buffet-style lunch with snacks and drinks. Because the camps are rural, the food is simple Thai cooking rather than Indian fare. If you are strictly vegetarian or have other dietary needs, tell us on WhatsApp at the time of booking and we will pass it to the camp; you can also bring your own snacks. Feed Me includes no meal, and Feed and Shower includes snacks and drinks only.

  • What is the travel time from the city, and how does the transfer work?

The Mae-Wang and San Pa Tong camps sit in the countryside about an hour by road from central Chiang Mai. Transfer is free within 5 km of Chiang Mai old city, with a surcharge beyond that. A 9-seater air-conditioned van covers most of the journey, and a 4x4 with covered bench seating handles the last 20 minutes to the camp. The Feed Me and Feed and Shower programmes are at the San Pa Tong camp and do not include transport.

  • Can we take photos with the elephants?

Yes. Bring a waterproof pouch or phone case so you can shoot during the mud coating and river bath. The Half Day and Watch Me programmes include a photographer, so you get pictures with the elephants without handling your own phone in the water.

  • How do we decide between the six programmes?

Feed Me (1 hr) and Feed and Shower (1.5 hrs) are short, no-transport visits at the San Pa Tong camp. The Half Day (6 hrs) covers feeding, the mud coating and the river bath, with transport and lunch included. Watch Me (6 hrs) is the observe-and-feed version. One Day Elephant Care (8 hrs) gives the most time at the camp in a single day, and the Volunteer programme runs 3 days and 2 nights. Tell us your group size and how long you want to stay and we will suggest one on WhatsApp.
